Intermediate Championship.
Ballymore played their third match in the Intermediate championship last Sunday 27th July when they took on Caulry in Cusack Park. Right from the throw in they played like a team who knew they had to be at their best to get anything from this game.
After taking an early lead with points from Mike Dineen, John Gilligan and Anthony Kearney it looked like Ballymore were in their stride.
Caulry then settled and got their first point on the scoreboard, this was quickly followed by a point from Ching Molloy.
Further points from John Gilligan, a free taken by Mike Dinnen and another point by Ching Molloy stretched Ballymore’s lead. But this was soon to end as Caulry came back and scored a goal.
Nearing the end of the first half Francis Hughes replaced Dermot Farrell. Caulry came back with another point, but Ballymore were fighting back. A goal chance appeared but after two missed attempts, and a point by Ching Molloy, Caulry went in at half time leading 1-5 to 0-7.

The second half saw the changing of a few more players. Brian Finnerty replaced what seemed like an injured Shane Rooney & Sam Wholley came on instead of Anthony Kearney.
After a wide and a point by Caulry, Ching Molloy scored another point for Ballymore. Quickly following suit was John Gilligan and Paddy Martin scored the point to level the game.
But Caulry were taking over the second half scoring four point’s one after the other.
Just as time was up Paddy Martin scored a goal for Ballymore but unfortunately it was too late.
At the final whistle the score was Caulry 1-11 Ballymore 1-10.

After losing their first three matches the pressure is on, and more than ever the lads need your support.

Team; V. McCormack, P.Harrington, B. McDermott, F. Eivers, S. Rooney, Andrew Slevin, Dec. Rooney, D. Eivers, P.O’Halloran, A. Kearney, M. Dineen, D.Farrell, D.Molloy, P. Martin and J.Gilligan. Subs used F. Hughes for Dermot Farrell, Brian Finnerty for Shane Rooney and Sam Wholley for Anthony Kearney.

I’d like to wish a speedy recovery to all our injured players, Michael Slevin, John Young, Bobby McDermott and Liam Gilligan.
Also welcome back to Darragh Rooney!

ACFL Division 5
Last Saturday 28th June Ballymore juniors ground out a good result against Kilbeggan in the Park. A slightly different looking Ballymore side took to the field last weekend and morale was high after some good reason results and more importantly good performances. From the first whistle however the omens didn’t look good as time and time again Ballymore gave away the last ball when surely a point was on the cards. Kilbeggan’s keeper also pulled off 2 good saves to deny Ballymore raising the Green flag. Kilbeggan on the other hand took their chances and scored a goal themselves to lead 1-5 to 0-4 at the break. To use the cliché it was a game of 2 halves as Ballymore rallied again and found their shooting boots. Solid defence and good link up play saw Ballymore move the ball well as they set about pulling back the deficit. An injury to Bobby McDermott saw substitute Willie Finnerty take up a position between the sticks and he was quickly into the action saving well from another Kilbeggan attack. Good points scoring from Louie Meares put Ballymore with in striking distance and when another period of good play saw the ball played to Alan Slevin a metre out he made no mistake and crashed the ball home. The scores were levelled in the next passage of play and then Ballymore turned the screw further and Kilbeggan had no response scoring only 4 points in the second half. At the final whistle Ballymore had pulled off a win which looked unlikely in the first half with a score line of 1-12 to 1-9. Team; B. McDermott, J. Martin, L. Gilligan, J. Young, C. McNeil, A. Slevin, B. Finnerty, A. Kearney, S. Rooney, Alan Slevin, M. Dineen, Stephen Rooney, D. Farrell, J. Eivers and L. Meares. Sub used Mr W. Finnerty.

Commiserations
To the Westmeath senior footballers who after a good performance against Dublin in Croke Park last Sunday 29th June in the Leinster semi final just ran out of steam at the end. The team played well but as supports left the ground the talk was all about ‘what if’. Never mind the match was there to be won and we look forward to taking the same levels of commitment on to the match with Tipperary on the 19th July.

Challenge match
Ballymore played out a comfortable win against Kenagh on Tuesday 17th June. The final score line was 3-13 to 0-1. A result which only added to the string of good results of late and set the lads up well for the match against Moate last weekend.

Ballymore V Moate All Whites ACFL Division 2.
As the good size crowd entered Moate’s ground last Friday evening, 20th June memories went back to the opening game of this years championship when the good pre season work put in my the team end in tatters. Any match against Moate was always going to be a tough one but coming so soon after the earlier disappointment this one had a bit more significance for Ballymore. You could have been forgiven for thinking it was Groundhog Day as shot after shot went wide of the Moate uprights in the first half. Then as half time beckoned a point blank save from Vinny McCormack seemed to stir the team into life. At the break the score line was 0-4 to 0-2 in favour of Ballymore but it could and should have been more. Solid defence work and a tremendous display by Ching including a well taken goal, opened a good lead for Ballymore in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Moate tried to get back in to the game but the damage was already done and at the final whistle the score line read 1-10 to 0-5. A score line that left the Ballymore fans wondering how they had not managed a better performance in the Championship. In truth points from Andrew Slevin and John Gilligan had helped but the performance of the night came from Ching Molloy who ended the match with figures of 1-8. With performances like this it makes you wonder why in recent times Ballymore have had only 1 player on the senior Westmeath panel. Team: V. McCormack, B. McDermott, Liam Gilligan, F. Eivers, S Rooney, A Slevin, D Rooney, P Martin, D Eivers, D Farrell, D Molloy, A Kearney, J Gilligan, P O’Halloran, L Meares. Subs used B Finnerty, Alan Slevin and M Slevin.

Apology
There has been a lot of talk around the village about a new player on the football team. Who is this Paul Smith? Well if any one knows please forward the information to me in the mean time apologies to Paul O’Halloran who has not changed his name as far as we know.

Next match
Ballymore take on Kilbeggan in an ACFL Division 5 tie this coming Saturday 28th June at 6.30pm in the Park. After a run a superb performances moral is high and the team are playing some good open football. Your support is always welcomed.

Training
Training for all players this Friday at 8.30pm in the Park, all players to attend.

Fund raising

Good luck
Best wishes to the Westmeath senior footballers who after a reasonable performance against our neighbouring counties need to up their game considerably against Dublin in Croke Park this coming Sunday 29th June in the Leinster semi final. Come on lads give us another 2004.

Intermediate League
Following the junior teams 1 point win over St Malachy’s recently it was the turn of the intermediate side to follow suit last Friday evening in the Park. The first half started slowly and saw Ballymore fall 6 points behind at one stage before they stepped up and started to play some good football. A much better performance in the second half was underlined with goals from Ching, Dermot Farrell and Paul Halloran. Given the slow start a final score line of 3-11 to 2-7 shows just what a turn around there was. A 7 point win against a strong St Malachy’s side would I am sure have surprised a lot of people but it was the manner of the win that was so impressive.

Sean Spollen Tournament
The junior team travelled the short distance to Tubberclaire last Sunday evening to take part in the Sean Spollen Tournament. Recent performances have not been good against Tubberclaire but after some good results of late Ballymore were in buoyant mood as they took on their neighbours. A good crowd enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining match with both sides battling hard and taking their chances well. The play flowed end to end resulting in a final score line of 4-8 to 3-10 and a 1 point win for Ballymore. The win was secured with goals from Dermot Farrell, Anthony Kearney, Paul Halloran and a collectors item from Louie Meares.

Division 5.
Ballymore’s junior side played St Malachy’s on Wednesday 28th May in Castletown. Coming so quickly after the intermediate defeat to Moate a good performance was required from the team and despite being behind at half time 1-5 to 0-6 Ballymore dug deep and turned in a strong second half. Good link up play and teamwork closed the gap and with just minutes left Anthony Kearney scored the point which ultimately gave Ballymore the victory 2-9 to 2-8. Whilst the score line was close and the game itself was hugely entertaining the story from the Ballymore point of view anyway was the character shown by most of the players who turned defeat in to victory. Well done lads.

Intermediate Championship.
This years Intermediate Championship got underway in Athlone last Sunday lunchtime amidst high levels of optimism for the year ahead. The first match saw Ballymore take on neighbours Moate All Whites and a tough match was anticipated. Despite a strong wind which made conditions extremely difficult for both teams Moate settled the better and kept the guy on the score board busy. Having said that Ballymore stayed in contention and at the break trailed by only 3 points, but that was as good as it got. Ballymore managed just 1 point in the entire second half and looked out of sorts in all departments. It is fair to say that they did have chances to get back into the match but a combination of poor shot selection and bad link up play did nothing for the morale and heads dropped while Moate continued where they had left of from the first half. The final score line was 1-10 to 1-4 and there is obviously plenty to do ahead of the next match a mouth watering tie against Maryland (minus Marty) in two weeks.

This year’s event was another resounding success and raised much needed funds for both Ballymore GAA and Fr Dalton’s. More details will be published as soon as they are available.

Intermediate Cup
A bleak and windswept evening saw the senior team away to Shandonagh on Saturday 19th April. Playing conditions were extremely poor and made for a scrappy game where Ballymore had few chances in the first half. Despite this they put it up to a strong Shandonagh side that were playing with more confidence. Points were traded until Shandonagh pulled away and established a 4 point lead that they would build on into the second period. Some tactical changes made to Tom Darcy’s side added some much needed impudouce to proceedings but unfortunately Ballymore were always chasing the game. With the conditions getting worse the game looked like it could boil over but thankfully common sense prevailed. The final score line of 12 to 8 in favour of Shandonagh did not reflect the hard work being put in by Ballymore who wasted good chances by putting the ball wide on at least 6 occasions. After some good and hard fought results of late it is hoped that the team can get back to winning ways in the League later this week.

Seniors v Kilbeggan
A good size crowd were given a great Easter present when Ballymore’s senior team took on Kilbeggan in Fr Dalton’s Park on Easter Sunday. Despite a cold breeze both teams started the match well and play flowed from end to end at some pace. Right from the start in was obvious that Ballymore looked much fitter and had their eye on a good points tally. Every kick flew over the bar and good performances throughout the team saw Ballymore lead by 10 points to 4 at the interval. Kilbeggan started the stronger in the second half but again the good point scoring from the first half saw Ballymore pull further away. Then came the 3 most memorable moments of the match the first was a good drive by Ballymore which saw Mick Slevin shoot on goal but despite a good save from the Kilbeggan keeper ‘Ching’ Molloy was on hand to clean up the loose ball and calmly slotted the ball into the open net. The second incident was perhaps one of the best pieces of play seen from the Ballymore team in a long while. Again Mike Slevin collected the ball in his own half and a series of one two’s saw him strike a great ball between the uprights which not only went to emphasis Ballymore’s superiority but also cap a great performance by Mike. The final play was a superb penalty save from Ciaran McCormack which took the spirit out of Kilbeggan’s play and ended the match as a contest. The final score was a resounding 1-12 to 7 points win for Tom Darcy’s lads. TEAM: C. McCormack, E. Keenan, D. Rooney, P. Harrington, M. Slevin, D. Eivers, F. Eivers, L. Gilligan, P. Martin, D. Molloy, P. Smith, D. Farrell, D. McCormack, F. Hughes and L. Meares. Subs used: A. McKnight, B. Finnerty, S. Rooney and A. Slevin.
